Empty Toilet Paper Rolls Needed

The 3rd grade Target students will need empty toilet paper rolls for an activity that we will be doing next Thursday, October 2. If you have any that you could donate, that would be great! If your student is not in 3rd grade, he/she can bring the rolls to Mrs. Murphy or me any day next week. Thanks!

3rd Grade Homework

Collectible Card - Due October 2

The 3rd grade Target students will be creating a collectible card to go along with our novel study of Swindle. The students were provided with a handout and piece of white card stock to use for the assignment, but they are welcome to be creative! As long as the students include the required information in the instructions, they may design the card however they would like. This link will bring you to the handout if needed: .

4th & 5th Grade Island Project

The 4th & 5th grade Target students have been assigned an island project related to our novel, The Twenty-One Balloons. The assignment has been adjusted for the two grade levels, so please check your email for specific directions for your student. For this project, the students will create their own islands similar to the island of Krakatoa.  This project can either be typed and illustrated or presented with PowerPoint or Prezi. It is important that the students do not wait until the last minute to begin their projects, and they should be certain to include all parts in the project. There are several components, and it would be wise to create a plan of action soon. Have fun and be creative! All projects are due Oct. 21/23 (depending on the student's Target day).

TriMathlon Information

4th Annual TriMathlon!
Join us on October 18, 2014 for our 4th Annual TriMathlon! Test your math skills, receive awesome participant gifts, earn money for local schools, and be eligible to win additional prizes!
This fun-filled event is open to kids in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades. Similar to the way a triathlon tests an athlete’s physical fitness through three athletic challenges, the TriMathlon tests a mathlete’s mental fitness through three exciting math challenges:
  • The Counting Game - Tests your ability to count from any number, to any number, by any number.
  • Magic Squares Challenge – Develop your own math problems to receive points.
  • Mental Math Workout - Tests your Number Sense through solving problems without pencil and paper.
Each challenge is tailored by grade and progressively increases in difficulty. All participants receive fun goody bags, a certificate of participation, and earn money for local schools. The top three scorers in each grade level at each center will receive additional medals and prizes.
For more information and to register, visit Don't miss out!
Students who register before September 30, 2014 will receive a FREE downloadable Math Plink game from Lakeshore!

5th Grade Homework

5th graders have a "3-2-1" reflection activity for Chapter 1 of The Twenty-One Balloons. Students have a hard copy of the assignment and I also emailed a back-up copy to parents. :) Please remind your child that the written portion of the assignment should meet 5th grade standards for writing.

Students were allowed to take their copies of the book home to use for the homework assignment. Please be sure your child brings his or her book back to class next week as we will be using it. Also, PLEASE encourage your child NOT to read ahead in the story. I know it is tempting for some of the students who are voracious readers, but I would really like for the students to wait to move forward as a group.

We still have 3 students without a book. If you are able to donate an extra copy, it would be greatly appreciated. Please just email me and let me know before you do just in case I have several offers.

Thank you to those of you who have already sent in the requested donations for The Word Masters Challenge. If you have not sent yours in yet, please send it by September 11th.
