1st Grade Target - 11/3/15

Every day is an adventure in 1st grade Target! Today, Daniel brought in a hydraulic robotic arm that he built at home as a connection to our Leonardo da Vinci unit. Early evidence of the understanding of the use of hydraulics was demonstrated by Leonardo da Vinci when he made sketches of simple hydraulic pumps. The students were fascinated by the robotic arm and enjoyed using it to grasp, lift, and move items.

As part of our "Helicopter Hang Time" STEM unit, the students worked together to sequence the steps of the engineering process.

After some independent journal writing time, we had a circle time conversation about overcoming obstacles and taking risks.

1st Grade Cloud Transformations

Leonardo da Vinci was very observant, and he could see things others did not. The first grade Target students went outside to observe the clouds. Then, they used cotton balls to create a 3-dimensional version of one of the clouds they saw. Finally, they transformed it with details and a title.

1st Grade STEM

The first grade Target students enjoyed working in groups to design and build bird houses using exactly 30 popsicle sticks. Each design was thoughtful and unique! These sweet students love birds just as much as Leonardo da Vinci does in Monday with a Mad Genius.

Vanderkooi's Nut-Free Classoom

As we are welcoming a new group of students to Target, I wanted to let you know that we have a nut-free classroom. There are children in our Target program with severe nut allergies that can be life-threatening from accidental exposure. Please make sure that the snacks you send for your children on their Target days do not contain any forms of nuts. Thank you!

WordMasters Challenge Meet #2 - February 18th & 19th

Our WordMasters Challenge Meet #2 is scheduled for February 18th & 19th. For parents who would like to get more information about the WordMasters Challenge competition, the website is http://www.wordmasterschallenge.com/.  Students should be studying the word lists for both meets #1 and #2, because as the guidelines state, “Each successive meet will be somewhat more difficult than the preceding one. Meet #2 analogies will feature words from both of the first two Word Lists (50 words); Meet #3 analogies will be based on all three Word Lists (75 words).”
